Tree Increase from the back of your work

A tutorial for working the Christmas Tree Increase from the Back of the work

Yesterday’ s tutorial covered working the Christmas Tree Increase from the front of the work, my favourite method.  Whenever possible, I work ring cables in the round, because they do not follow the pattern of cabling row, resting row (where you knit all knits and purl all purls.) Since I need to be cabling on resting rows anyhow, I may as well be on the side to see them easily. But here is how to work a CTI from the back for those designs where you just have to work back and forth:

Christmas Tree Increase Purl (CTIp) 2-
stitch(CTI2), 4-stitch (CTI4), 6-stitch (CTI6)
and 8-stitch (CTI8) versions

*With yarn in front,

insert the right needle
between the stitch you are increasing in and
the stitch next to it from behind purlwise.

Yarn over draw up a stitch.

S6306181

With yarn in
front, slip the central stitch back to the right
needle,

S6306183

insert the left needle from the back
into the stitch you just drew up purlwise,

S6306184

yo,

S6306185

draw up a stitch. Without dropping the
stitch off the right needle, slip the central
stitch onto the left needle.*

Repeat from *to*
x 0(1,2,3). 1 stitch increased to 3 (5,7,9)
stitches. The increase is named for the number
of stitches added, not the total number on
the needles after the increases.
With yarn in front, slip the stitches on the left
needle onto the right needle.

Sometimes you need an odd number of stitches increased, the technique is the same, you just stop at a different place:

numbered increase 3-stitch(CTI2), 5-stitch
(CTI4), 7-stitch (CTI6) and 9-stitch (CTI8)
versions

the stitch you are increasing in and
the stitch next to it from the back, purlwise.

you just drew up from the back, purlwise,
yo, draw up a stitch. Without dropping the
stitch off the right needle, slip the central
stitch onto the left needle, Insert the needle
between the stitch you are increasing in, and
one you drew up earlier, yarn over, draw up
loop.* Repeat from *to* x 0(1,2,3). 1 stitch
increased to 4 (6,8,10) stitches. The increase
is named for the number of stitches added,
not the total number on the needles after the
increases.

needle onto the right needle
