OK on to the questions….
1 – What is your design process? and What influences your style?
They both have the same answer.
My blankets are inspired by many things but mainly the landscape and place I live in, Exmoor, North Devon, UK which is one of the UK’s national parks.
Most of the blankets in my new book (Bert’s Crochet Baby Blankets) have several inspirations, for example Pixie Dust started off with mitred square and colour experiments, which were lead to the inspiration of the Pixies that live on the moor, the blanket is covered in pixie dust maybe scattered by my dog Tinkerbelle who protects my grandson Bert.
The inspirations are starting off points, I experiment with colour and shape and design while I crochet, I treat my blankets as art so add and take away elements until I have a design I am happy with. My process can involve an awful lot of frogging
2 – What about designing and producing patterns are you most adept at, what parts are you most fond of, and what parts are challenging?
I love the beginnings of a blanket, so much potential and so many possibilities, I also love drawing charts and formatting my patterns as they are also pieces of art. But I hate the written part of the process, I am dyslexic and have severe discalculia (a form of number dyslexia) so am always terrified it doesn’t make sense or the numbers are all wrong, luckily I have people who check everything I do.
These days I also really struggle with self promotion, I used to be really good at it, but these days I would rather hide under a rock and crochet 🙂
3 – What do you find most important in photography?
I do all my photography outside as I prefer natural light, as the visual element of my patterns is very important my photo’s need to be perfect.
4 – What have you learned from the promotion?
I’m always overwhelmed that there are so many lovely ladies out there dedicated to their craft and keen to participate.
5 – What is your usual process on a fiber project, for instance, do you start with a yarn, a cute pattern, a need you’ve noticed, something exciting you saw in a movie you want to copy, or a technique you want to learn – then what do you do next and then what?
The same as number 1
6 – Does anything intimidate you in knitting or crochet?
Apart from the numbers I’m quite content.
7 – When you want to learn something, do you look it up in a book, on U-tube, or seek a real person to teach you?
Youtube, I’m not a good pupil, Id rather watch a tutorial and work it out myself.
8 – Any repetitive motion disorders due to knitting or crochet? How do you deal with them?
Not really, but I have done in the past, I find crocheting and sewing in ends helps alternate the movement of my hand.
9 – What makes you buy a pattern (lovely photo, the story of the project, it looks do-able, it looks slightly challenging…)
I don’t normally buy patterns for myself, but I do buy my knitting patterns for my husband, for things I want him to make me 🙂 At the moment I’m searching for the perfect waterfall cardi for him to make me.
