Here is the story of how I got such wonderful photos by Andy Wilson.
I’d named the sweater Herring Run because there are about a million sweaters named Herringbone Sweater listed on Ravelry. Since there are herring runs (waterways herring travel up to spawn) near us, we figured we should photograph the sweater there. The office manager at Dan’s work recommended the fish ladders in Middleborough, and we planed a date day. When Dan and I arrived at the Oliver Mill park, the light was perfect, and the fish were running. Dan had taken the day off of work and dressed up, but it was more of a scouting day, with plans to use a gift card at a restaurant with a gf menu. The lot was full of bucket trucks. Linemen were taking their coffee breaks while walking the river seeing if they could spot herring. As the morning went by, lots of people showed up, little kids showed each other the best places where you could see through the surface glare and see the herring jump up the mini-waterfalls of the fish ladder. It was like “Where is Waldo,” only outside in real time.
There were also a lot of photographers with expensive looking lenses, and we were intimidated to show up with our dinky point and shoot. So we ate our gf cookies, drank our coffee, and told told camera puns in the van; thus fortified we introduced ourselves. It turns out that the Fall River camera club was holding a contest that day, and they loved talking about their lenses, the fish, the (many) things that eat the fish, and Andy offered to take the photos for us.
We offered to pay.
He laughed.
