Interview with My Friend Elisabeth

circs or pins?
Is this for holding a place?  I use plastic washers from Kathleen’s lab.
They are colorful and just the right size.

Dpn or magic loop?

Double pointed needles?  That’s what I used to make socks.  I used a set
of four and then added one more.  I like using five needles best.

English or Continental?
I don’t know what this means.

Novelty yarn or classic plain?
Not sure about this either.  I used some 100% wool that Kathleen gave me
when she visited one time.  It was self patterning.  One of the pairs of
socks I made was kind of zany and my Mother in Law calls them my Dr. Suess
socks.  But, she doesn’t understand how nice it is to have a pair of wool
socks that are not so thick you need to wear hiking boots so your feet
don’t feel stuffed into your shoes.  I love how warm they keep my feet –
even at the end of a long day, they are comfortable.  Definitely my
favorite socks.  If I knew where to get more yarn like this, I would
absolutely make myself another pair.

Socks or Sweaters?

Socks, although I’ve thought of trying to make a sweater.  It’s kind of
daunting to me though.

Crochet too?

Yes!

Process or FO?
I don’t know what this means.

Garments or things that don’t have to fit anyone in particular?
I like useful, so I guess that means garments.  Do socks count as garments?

Short Answer Questions (skip any that aren’t fun!)

What is your usual process on a fiber project, for instance, do you
start with a yarn, a cute pattern, a need you’ve noticed, something
exciting you saw in a movie you want to copy, or a technique you want to
learn – then what do you do next and then what?

It depends.  With the socks I started with the yarn Kathleen gave me and
with her telling me that nothing was so wonderful as home made wool socks.
She showed me a new way to knit and we had fun laughing together on my
living room floor an knitting away.  So that was the motivation.  Then
because I didn’t have anything else to do with the yarn she gave me, I
finished the socks.  Then I found out she was right – home made wool socks
rock!

Does anything intimidate you in knitting or crochet?

Patterns and making something fits are intimidating.  I have no idea how
to read a knitting pattern.  I think I could do pretty much anything in
crochet though.  Dropping stitches in knitting is intimidating too.  I
hate to realize that ten rows back, I dropped a stitch.

When you want to learn something, do you look it up in a book, on
U-tube, or seek a real person to teach you?

I like the idea of a person teaching me, but in actuality, I’m more likely
to seek out a book because then I can go at my own pace.

Any repetitive motion disorders due to knitting or crochet? How do you
deal with them?

I don’t do it enough to have this problem.

Do you frequent a particular yarn store?
No.

Do you usually finish things?  If not, does it bother you?
Yes.  Well, I never finished that pink vest, but I usually do finish
things.  It does bother me to have things not finished.  Perhaps that is
Rich’s influence on me.

What makes you buy a pattern (lovely photo, the story of the project, it
looks do-able, it looks slightly challenging…)

I don’t buy patterns.

What gives you the feeling that you got your money’s worth out of a
pattern?

What do you most enjoy about knitting or crochet?
I like that is practical.  I like that it is portable.  I like that you
can pick it up and put it down and then pick it up again.  It is the kind
of craft you can do with children running around.

What are your crafting ambitions?
I like to make things that don’t look home made.
